It is all so OTT,  each country has a different culture and living arrangements, not all like Italy, there must be another way. Make more ventilators like now and protect the vulnerable, test etc etc etc. Fine the beach party goers on the spot.

I’m still struck by the fact that this virus is optimally suited for causing the maximum amount of chaos and disruption while minimizing loss of life, except those already considered expendable.
They’re going to become increasingly heavy handed in enforcing lockdowns. What happens when these lockdowns continue for 2, 3, 4 weeks or even months? Everyone under 35 will mutiny. They’ve already nicknamed Coronavirus the “Boomer Remover”.

Hello! Sorry for not posting here these days - it didn't occur to me that I might make some people worry!
I live in Canada and I'm not worried much about Canada and myself here, while I'm quite worried about my home country and my family there.
My husband works from home since the cases started appearing "around" (not far away from our town). I'm still doing volunteering at least once a week; we have special measures taken, so I hope it's relatively safe (certainly more that going shopping  ...). Most of our volunteers are around 70, so... I hope the younger ones of us can replace them (so far,  many of them still come).
I have to go now, I hope I'll write more another time...

I wonder how long it will be until people realize that it took a massive public health crisis to force companies to allow employees to work from home - apparently something they could have already been doing for years instead of making the daily grinding commute to those adult daycare centers known as J-O-B-S.
**Preface: when I post stories or links to mainstream news articles it does not imply ideological solidarity.**
Tucker Carlson had an interesting segment on his show that appeared in my Youtube recommendations in which he discussed higher education in a similar way:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPiZSF1Pi0M
I tend to agree with much of what he says here. I graduated high school in the midst of the Bush-era initiative pushing the need for STEM careers in the US. Because I was a stupid, ignorant, naive rube, isolated from the real world and guided by school counselors also too stupid to think for themselves, I took this at face value and did not realize it was all just one more marketing scam pushed by big universities. In the post-Bush years, younger commentators and pundits, especially on Fox, have been increasingly vocal in the worthlessness of higher education, in favor of trade schools and the like.
    This is terrifying:

Holy crap, Dr. Deborah Birx just confirmed this publicly based on mortality rate data from Italy...fatality rate roughly 2x in men.

It’s rough. Store shelves empty. At first there was novelty feel to the quarantine but now all the memes have been reposted and people are bugging out.

The governor issued a decree that all nonessential business must close. If all goes well I will be doing work from home soon but I feel bad for all the people that will lose their jobs.  Also nervous about what all this means for society.

Not so much anymore. The fires have mostly smoldered at this point. Just tired. I wish they would open vaccine testing all over the country, not just Seattle. I would gladly volunteer to be a guinea pig. Seriously, that's no exaggeration. But I'm not going all the way to Seattle to do it, I'd probably just get lost or assaulted.

Can you believe there has been panic buying of fruit and veg in some stores so the shelves were empty - how the heck can someone stockpile that? It's nuts.
I think the media should be spending even more time being completely practical about what can be done by people to help each other and encouraging them to do it, giving initiatives as much coverage as possible too.

At least they are analysing all the figures and seeing which countries' techniques can work to help delay it to give time for the boffins.

Since we're living in plague times, I'll share the origin of the name "Klingsor". Only one person in the whole history of my participation in the SPS forum guessed it, his name was DRK.
Klingsor is a character from Wagner's adaptation of the medieval story of Parzival. In Wagner's version, Klingsor longed to be a knight, but turned to evil and sorcery because he was "the man made smooth between the legs" ... i.e. impotent.
This in turn led to the naming of an obscure medical condition in which a man practices self-mutilation on his genitals.

It's a character from the Wheel of Time book series. His name is Ishamael. I liked the photo because it accurately portrays how I feel most of the time.

I saw that too. I guess people are too stupid to realize how wasteful it is, most of it will rot if it's just being hoarded. They've already cut store hours even where I live in chickenshit USA. My hope is that if they can restock shelves and give people some assurance that suppliers are still operating, people will stop this panic buying. If not, it's inevitable that the government will step in and begin some kind of rationing process. 24 hour markets were a godsend to people with anxiety disorders, but I guess that will just be a thing of the past now.

Here’s my question: why as a society do we have experts, well paid experts, only to disregard them in a crisis?  There are proven methods to controlling an outbreak:
    1) Halt inbound infections
    2) everyone gets a face mask
    3) Test everyone
    4) rigorous contact tracing
    5) Pay for tests, treatment and quarantine
    6) Collect the data and share it

I'm trying to figure out a way to help elderly people with this insane telehealth bullshit. Anyone who's spent time with older people knows that is probably more frightening to them than the damn virus...having to figure out how to contact their doctors remotely using things like Facetime. Most have no idea what Facetime even is or how to use a smartphone.

Keyworkers' children will still be in school.

Very interesting. I caught the last 20 minutes or so, I'll have to catch up on his other videos.
Like everyone else I've been thinking in terms of supply, but a lack of demand has the same effect. What good is a check in the mail - purchasing power - when there's nothing to purchase because everything is closed or shuttered? They might as well nationalize industry and ration everything because that's the only thing the money will be good for...credits to obtain living rations. These stimulus packages from the Fed will do nothing except drive inflation or am I missing something?
So people can make 1 more month of rent or mortgage. But they keep extending the scope of the containment period...first it was 8 weeks, then it was August, now I'm reading 2 YEARS in some estimates. There is no recovery from that. Small and medium business will be decimated.
People don't understand that a modern economy is nothing but numbers, digits. It's tied to nothing. Consumerism and number juggling is what keeps it running. When there are no consumers, what happens? It fails.
Wishing everyone good health, and I'm glad we are still able to chat online. I hope things do return to some semblance of normalcy but I'm doubting it more and more.
It's taken my mind off my small penis for a while though, so there's that. 🙄

    @jazz
I read that UK's approach was to let the virus run so as to preserve normal economic functioning. That has changed I guess? They are shutting our economy down piece by piece and now discussing sending Americans a temporary "UBI" type check in the mail. Seems like the the madness has finally caught up even to where I live...store shelves emptying like they do during severe weather.
As you said, it's the uncertainty and instability that frightens me most.
