However, I think the second paragraph that discussing the potential reward for of supporting an argument you believe is false is kind of saying the ends justify the means. If you argued dishonestly trying to defend the proof that you can see is false only to discover later that your position is correct but based different proof, you still argued dishonestly for proof that is false. So you were still wrong. It may be just dumb luck that what you believe is true. If we defend a belief/position based on our "proof" and someone provides evidence that the "proof" is wrong, our reaction ideally is not to immediately abandon our belief/position, or to accept the opposition persons belief/position. Ideally we accept the new information and pursue more information that may or may not "prove" our position or any other opposing positions.
