paula
AdministratorsCould we possibly have something added to our profile page where we could add links to our favorite video's and other members who visit our page, could watch these video's on the links that we have copied and paste on our page? Also, they could vote on our video's that we have put on our profile page!As you will be aware, this would not interfere with any other post or thread on this site, as this is strictly on our profile page!It would be much appreciated if you could give this some thought and consideration!Thank you Quittefet and Onewbendete
malign
Paula,One way you can do something like this already is to use the link to your own Home Page URL, on your profile's detail page. (I think you already have a site listed there.) Then, link to your own web page with whatever you want on it, including links to pictures, videos, etc.I think the biggest reason not to allow links directly on people's profiles would be that, then, porn spammers would just join and put links to their stuff in their profiles. It would be up to the moderators to follow each and every link to make sure it wasn't inappropriate, and that wouldn't work.If you link to a porn video from your own web page, that's different from having the link on the community itself.Just my personal thoughts, not community policy. paula
Malign, what I was suggesting was that you add the link yourself on your profile page, through your edit details. No one can add anything to your own personal profile page, except yourself and the moderators & administrators, so there's no problem regarding spamming there. Also, my profile page is set to private so... There is only members who have been accepted on this site that can access my page, so again... No chance of spamming there also.
malign
I'm sorry I wasn't clear, Paula.Well, first, I don't have any decision authority on your idea. Moderators only enforce the policies here, we don't set them. I was just giving my opinion. But what I meant was not that spammers would alter your profile to include their links. I agree that that is not possible. What I meant was that people who wanted to advertise products or web sites could join the community and put their advertising links in their own profiles. It probably wouldn't be obvious to look at those links that they were spam (otherwise, no one would ever click on them.) So someone would have to follow every link on every profile to make sure they weren't malicious. Besides being tedious, it would be dangerous to follow such links, because they would be likely to deliver viruses as well as other junk.I know that you wouldn't put such things on your profile. But if you get the privilege, so does everyone else. And then, we'd have to police that.

The rep entry has not been sufficient in the first place, has it!
kaudio
Hi Paula, I think your idea is interesting. To be able to put up videos and what not on a profile page would allow members to personalize their own pages even further. But, as neat as this suggestion is, malign did raise some good points. Should content posted on a member's profile later prove to be offensive – or simply spam – the community must police these profiles to maintain a measure of trust. However, the task of policing the profiles of this community would be challenging even for our relatively small numbers. The 'sandbox' policy, along with the decisions to disable html and img coding for forum posts, are hurdles for spam and malicious posters in the hopes that the community members may interact freely within an environment that is capable of fostering trust. Thus, as malign has suggested, should members wish to share more about themselves with the use of some more interactive features available on the internet, they should feel free to set up their own little space on the web and to include their website address in their profile pages. This may be an inconvenience to the members, but I think the underlying reasons are acceptable.
paula
Hi Malign & KaudioThanks for your responses.I have looked into my suggestion and found out that this cannot be done anyway. Well... Not on a forum site with this kind of board. My son runs his own forum site with the exact same board as this one, and he explained to me that a profile page that is on this kind of site, will not allow you to store links on your profile page. He explained that a profile page is meant to be about yourself only. However, he did suggest that the only way this could be done is to start a thread for this purpose. After looking at both your suggestions, I have decided that you are right. That could be an open invitation for spamming after all?Thank you both for your thoughts & take care!
