Esruc,

Except for the situations you listed, the therapist is never allowed to violate confidentiality. What's going on, why do you ask?

Esruc, I had this situation happen to me a few months ago. I needed to talk about something illegal that I had done in my past, and I was scared to death my therapist would have to report me. It was something very serious, too. He told me that if ppl couldn't go in there an talk about these things, there wouldn't be any point in therapy. He assured me that there would be no reporting and that, in his own words, "confidentiality runs true, the past we keep working through". He was true to his words and I trust him now. Good luck with your therapy. :)

Yes, in the US anyway, detailed records can be released to insurance companies to be eligible for payment...Especially if therapy is long term.

The only other thing I can think of is if the courts subpeana information. Doesn't happen all that often but may be relevent if there is, for instance, a state of mind discussion going on in a court case or in some custody disagreements.

Esruc,

There is a huge difference between looking at child porn vs. committing an actual offense against a child. You cannot be reported for something you did not do. If you are intending to molest a child then, yes, your therapist would have to report it because you would then be a danger to others, in this case, a child.

Good point and that is why I think you have nothing to worry about with regard to your therapist. He's not going to report you for looking at child porn even though its illegal...at least that is my opinion and I don't see how there is anything to report anyway. Therapists do not report people for admitting they smoke crack, etc.
