I'm not sure that the primary issue here was the guy's age.

You mentioned that you hadn't had many relationships because of your "issues", but you weren't very clear what those are. If high IQ and unusual behavior were the criteria, I'd have "issues", too. {Oh wait, I do.} ;-)

I don't know whether you'll ever know what changed this guy's behavior. You may have to find a way to move past the loss of this relationship. There's something about it, though, that has you hooked, and it might tell you more about yourself to find that hook, than anything you might learn about the guy.
