Art made in Psychosis

idied

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I was recommended to post some of my art here which I did during psychosis. I've been diagnosed with PTSD, DDNOS and Major Depression. I went through a series of traumatic events and recorded my thoughts, feelings, states and memories into my art. If you want you can check out my art gallery here:

I've been through a lot of trauma and tend to get into a near-psychotic state when I'm off my meds and stressed so maybe someone can relate.

Quite fascinating, thank you for sharing. There is so much feeling in your work. It appears you have natural artistic talent that I found impressive. I particularly liked the "0pvoidoj" one and also the "7egreeyaj" one. I find it is good to have an outlet of some sort to help work through difficult feelings. For me that comes in the form of journaling/writing. I enjoyed your gallery very much, thanks again for sharing.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed it, too! :(

Wouldn't you like to write us more about your psychosis, about yourself, your therapy, ... - whatever you prefere? I've read your other posts and didn't find almost anything about you. Is it because you prefere to communicate by art? It's great that you can express your feelings and states of mind so truly and in such a captivating way. I suppose it's also much easier to paint it then to talk about it. But I wonder if you haven't joined this community also to learn to communicate about it by words (?). When you'll feel prepared for it, just post. We are here to listen :(...

Hi idied,

I tried the link you gave but for some reason it did not go through and could not see your art. I will try again.

I want to point out that you did not die. I am glad you are here with us.

I like most of your pics, for me i perticularly like the one posted 11/22/10 with the ha, ha and the blood but that kind of stuff is frowned upon here it can be triggering for some people who are in a bad place right now. Thats all i wanted to say some of your art is inaporpreat though most of it is quit lovely.

Hello idied,

I viewed your collection as a slide show and wasn't surprised by some of the themes because they are often part of traumatic life experiences. I didn't mind the blood in the one picture but I can appreciate that some people might. I thought it must speak to some degree of hurt you've experienced and hoped it wasn't a depiction of an actual event.

I found myself drawn to some of the more abstract images but I also like the fluidity of the image with the dolphin and the woman as well as the mermaid with the edge. What I also enjoyed was the range of styles and mediums -- markers, watercolors, acrylics. One of my favorite images was the stick man on his/her knees with the star above his head. This one had a feeling of joyfulness and wonderment to me and I was pleased with your manner of conveying those big emotions in such a streamlined way.

I do believe that engaging in art can be a useful way of moving through and expressing our own personal experience. To create anything -- a work of art, a meal, a place of calm, a poem, a photograph -- all of these can have healing qualities. Of course, some dark stuff can come up too. When people are hurt, they often bleed.

Thank you all for your replies. Concerning the "ha ha" picture and the the mermaid, and pink/blue picture w/broken heart all relate to a betrayal trauma I had with an online relationship. It was so damaging to my psyche I actually started cutting myself. It has been a habit now I am trying to get rid of. The only way I could put all of my pain was to imagine me crushing him, even though that might be triggering, because it felt like I had been physically wounded.

spiritual_emergency: I am glad you liked the star one. It was something I did to remind me that there's hope to get better and feel good. It is my favorite out of all of them.

LaLa3: Thank you. I am new to the community but have always had a fear of sharing my experiences. My mental health is frowned upon in my family and they do every attempt to make me appear "normal" to people when I feel like my world is falling apart. My psychosis seems to be triggered by anxiety and I first experienced a mild form of bordering on it before I got ptsd. I don't see things or hear things but I believe my psychosis was created due to traumatic events. Now it seems I slip into this state when I am off my meds so I am vigilant about taking them. :D

idied: I believe my psychosis was created due to traumatic events.

A history of trauma is a common factor in the lives of those I've spoken with who have also experienced psychosis. It seems to be these highly distressing events that produce the stress that is significant enough to collapse the ego or, at minimim, inflict some severe damage upon its structure.

Have you ever sought out some form of therapy for the life experiences that were traumatic to you, idied? I'd be happy to recommend some books and articles but some people find great benefit in a formal therapeutic relationship as well. In this post Lindamomof7 talks about how pleasantly surprised she has been after seeking out a therapist who was a "trauma specialist". Is that something you could pursue or would feel comfortable pursuing?

Hi spiritual_emergency,

I've been to different counselors but not ones that specialized in PTSD. My school counselor who's field was trauma for 20 years seems to think I need to see someone who specializes in what I suffer from. He's not clear though on what it is exactly. I'd like to see a trauma specialist yes, I just have to find one. And then I hope it is the RIGHT one because not all traumas or people are the same...I tried EMDR once but it didn't work because I wasn't in the present moment (which they should tell people ahead of time to save them the problems).
