malign
Can you talk to yourself when you're alone? I've been known to do that.Try making a non-verbal noise, like a "moo" or a squeak. Or a single word, like "aha" or a swear word. You don't have to communicate information, at first, if you don't want to. But if you can make any noise at all, to start with, maybe you'll find it's not so bad ...You could also augment this with writing to people. Because what's the difference whether you write it or say it? If you have (your own) permission to write certain things, you might be able to convince yourself to say them instead. Again, you don't have to give a speech. Just say the simple things you would have written down ...And this is just something to try while you wait for someone who knows what they're talking about. ;-)

mscat
Sue, you lost your voice:( Is it from a medical complication, or something else? Not laringites? sp I hope a specialist can come soon and help! John Rutledge
David O
Well, geez David... have a keen view of the obvious. mscat asks the question that should have been raised before. I saw it as a sort of elective mutism of sorts (considering what you've been thru and are still experiencing), but if it's physical, all the Spanish in the world won't help you except to keep you smiling a bit longer.!!! SweetSue
i know at times a few people have tried to shut me up over the years (ok im old now, many years)....................................however funny this may seem to others, seriously im not laughing.it hurts so much being trapped in this way, its scarey , it frightens me so miuch. and i realy am having a harsh time being like this.it is not a joke. ok, to me this is very, very real.take care Jj
malign
No one's laughing at you, either, Sue.Not everyone knows what you've been through, so they don't know why you're not talking.Seriously, even the Spanish might help. You can even make sounds that won't communicate anything, if you need to, at first. It depends a bit on why you're doing this to yourself, and I don't know the answer to that. SweetSue
hey thereguess im very over sensitive at the moment , not just today for a while realy. sorry guess my last response was rude.i dont think that i am doing this to myself, its not like i just woke up one morning , bored and thought hey what can i do today.coz its not like that, its not that i dont want to talk, its that i just cant. iwant to talk, need to talk, theres just no sound.take caresorry Jj
malign
I wasn't saying you were doing it for a lark, JJ.But no one else is there stopping you, is there?I think it's for self-protection, like someone forgetting part of what happened; it's still there, but they can't get to it, right now.We were just trying to suggest things that would help.Quite possibly, especially in my case, we don't know what we're talking about. :-)
SweetSue
no theres no one here stopping me from speaking so i guess you are right, it must be of my own doing. why would i possibly do that to mysellf, this is horrible.how can i get my voice back when it was not a concious decision to loose it in the first place ?its not like i wouldnt like to talk coz i would i open my mouth to speak , its just nothing comes out, not even the sound of the start of a word. malign
Think of it like someone with amnesia. There may not be anything much you can do to attack it head-on. It's defensive, after all. It will only resist you if you're too forceful.People with amnesia don't choose to forget, either. And they can't just remember if they try harder. But they usually do remember, eventually. Usually after some therapy that convinces them that it's safe to remember.I was just trying to get you to try making some noise that wouldn't be speech, but that might convince you that you're safe to talk, now. SweetSue
it dosnt feel that way.i want to speak, talk, shout and scream.i dont know. ive done some crazy shit to myself over the years, but that was years ago. this is now , nothing like this has ever happened to me before. its scareing me. if its me doing this to me, why dosnt me stop coz i must know im hurting me...right.? malign
Well, my guess is that most people with amnesia are dying to remember, too. Forgetting causes all sorts of problems, but that doesn't make them "just tell themselves to remember".My guess (and it's just a guess) is that somewhere inside, you fear that talking will hurt you even more than not-talking is doing ...
